While not a formal Rotary trip, it was put together for us by Alonzo, a Rotarian travel agent friend in Brazil. And while the couple travelling with us from Ottawa are not Rotarians (yet!), this doesn’t mean that we will not be connecting with fellow Rotarians. In Ecuador we will be staying with a Rotarian ITHF member in Guayaquil. And in Lima we will join Alonzo and a group of students from Australia, Japan, France, and Germany who are based in Brazil for their Rotary Youth Exchanges, and who will tour Peru with us. International or what?
There are so many ways that you can experience the excitement of travel through Rotary, and many Rotarians already take advantage of all or some of these opportunities:
- Rotary’s Project Fairs connect clubs interested in collaborating with global partners with those seeking international service projects. They typically last two to three days and may include visits to service projects or opportunities to experience the local culture. Project fairs in this Rotary year will be, or have already been held in Argentina, Mexico, Guinea (West Africa), Honduras (Uniendo), and Colombia (https://my.rotary.org/en/events-and-connections/events/project-fairs). Members of District 7040 have a long history of participating in the Uniendo and Colombia project fairs and will likely do so again in January-February 2024.
- District Friendship Exchanges provide opportunities for members of one District to visit another, usually staying with Rotarians in the host District; they are typically reciprocal, with Rotarians from the other District also coming to visit us. It’s a wonderful way to travel, but it’s not like a regular holiday - it’s an experience. You learn about how the locals live, make lifelong friends, and discover new cultures and communities. And often while sharing Rotary projects and ideas. - Rotary’s International Travel & Hosting Fellowship (ITHF) promotes and facilitates regional, national, and international "connections" on an individual basis between its members. ITHF members connect with and visit other members and have the opportunity to host ITHF members from other countries. Connecting with Rotarians through the ITHF permits members to travel and see other parts of the world in a different way (https://www.ithf.org/home).
- The annual Rotary International Conventions, Rotary’s largest events, bring together Rotary members and the family of Rotary from around the world for inspiration, information, and fun! Held in a different city each year, you’ll find People of Action from around the world brainstorming solutions to some of the most pressing challenges and celebrating our works of service that create lasting change. You’ll make new connections, renew, and strengthen existing friendships, discover fresh perspectives as you interact with people from different countries and cultures – and have fun doing it! - Our District Conferences allow members of D7040 from across our bi-national, bilingual, multi-regional and multi-cultural District to get together for fun and fellowship, while learning about and discussing issues of concern to our members. Given our bi-national and multi-cultural District, DisCon’24 will allow for a simple and easy international experience! So, although we think mainly of the International in Rotary International as meaning working abroad to help those in need in other countries (and the importance of this element is not to be underestimated), don’t forget the fun and fellowship part of International that you can experience through the travel opportunities that await you as Rotarians.
