May/mai 2022

Youth Service Month / le service à la jeunesse

May’s theme is Youth Service. We will continue with the ABCs of Rotary that I started in July 2021 at the beginning of my term as District Governor – we are nearing the end of the alphabet and the end of another Rotary year.

The letters V & W inspire the words Vision, Volunteer, Vocation, Work and We.
Vision allows us to see that much is possible when we work together. RYLA, Youth Exchange, Interact and EarlyAct are prime examples of Rotary’s vision for youth. We encourage youth to build international understanding and make new friends, develop leadership skills while discovering the power of Service Above Self. They will have the opportunity to find out that serious leadership can be seriously fun and connects Youth with leaders in their community and around the world.

With these skills we encourage youth to own their vision, and to take action to make a difference in their school and community.

Since the shift to online learning began at the start of the pandemic, The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) team at the MHCC has been inundated with requests to develop a virtual (remote) version of its popular Facilitator Certification Training program. Until recently, the program has only been available for in person sessions across Canada. So far over 1,400 facilitators have successfully completed the program, with many more expected to sign up in the coming months as the virtual version of the course launches to the public this May.

Rotary Days of Service

The response from the district for our Rotary Days of Service has been great. There are so many pictures and stories and newspaper links that we will so something special after the District Conference is done. There was just too much all at once to deal with.

If you submitted, and will be attending in person at the Saturday session, look for me and I hope to have a cheque for you. I will have cheques and a printer so I expect to be able to deal with any club that participated.

In the Spirit of Peace

The history of the Rotary Club of Kyiv Advance began at the end of 2013, when several like-minded people formed the Rotary Club of Donetsk Advance. We were united by the idea of community service and our passion for art and music. The club supported young talents and devoted its energies to the development of educational programs in the city.

In 2014, after the outbreak of military conflict in eastern Ukraine, many members of our club fled to different parts of the country and even abroad. Subsequently, four club members who had moved to Kyiv decided to resume our club activities under the name Rotary Club of Donetsk Advance. Four other members who had ended up abroad or remained in Donetsk subsequently decided to keep their membership as well. So, we retained eight members.

The Rotary Club of Westmount - Helping Ukrainian Refugees in Romania

The Ukrainian tragedy has mobilized Rotarians worldwide to do what they do best - take action in service to those in need. The Rotary Club of Westmount in Quebec received a plea for assistance in March from a partnership of five Romanian Rotary clubs helping Ukrainian refugees pouring across their border. The need was sudden and urgent, as women, children, and the elderly found themselves ripped from their homes and facing uncertainty in another country. Our fellow Rotarians in Iași stepped forward to provide front line medical attention, food, accommodation, translation services, legal assistance, and more.

What Could You Do with $25,000?

Since its founding in 2007, the WASH Rotary Action Group has been dedicated to its Mission:

To further this cause, WASH-RAG’s Board of Directors is delighted to announce a one-time, special grant of $25,000 to encourage Rotary Districts and clubs to become active participants in a WASH project. Better still – that $25,000 will be eligible for a dollar-to-dollar match from DDF and/or cash contributions to the Global Grant.

Eligibility

All Rotary Districts and Clubs qualified to participate in The Rotary Foundation’s Global Grants Program can apply for the grant. Clubs who have participated previously in a small WASH project, funded by a District Grant are encouraged to apply.
