The Campbell Oudeh McNamee (COM) Rotary scholarship was established in 2018 with the goal of providing opportunities to open doors to education and life for economically disadvantaged students living in rural communities in Jamaica.  The aim of the scholarship is to make music a transformative force that break down barriers and makes it accessible for youth who would otherwise face economic hardship in attaining their educational pursuits. The 2024 winners, pictured with PDG Fay Campbell are TYRIQUE JOHNSON, Bachelor of Music Education (left) and KHALIL MATHEW BLAKE, Bachelor of Music in Performance (right).

If you learn music, you’ll learn history. If you learn music, you’ll learn mathematics. If you learn music, you’ll learn most all there is to learn. — Edgar Cayce

The criteria to qualify for the scholarship includes outstanding academic achievement, community engagement, a well-rounded character, and a commitment to teaching music education in the rural areas of Jamaica post-graduation.  Since the inception of the scholarship program, a total of $18,000 Canadian Dollars has been awarded to deserving students at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts.

While vacationing in Jamaica this past February, I was privileged to tour the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts – Kingston Campus.  While at the College, I met with The Principal Durrett Campell, who a Rotarian. I also met with Melody McDowell, Snr. Assistant Registrar and Roger N. Williams, D.M.A. Dean - School of Music. They were instrumental in identifying qualified candidates for Campbell Oudeh McNamee (COM) Rotary scholarships.

I also met with  the 2023 Scholarship recipients:
i.    TYRIQUE JOHNSON - Bachelor of Music Education
ii.    KHALIL MATHEW BLAKE - Bachelor of Music in Performance

Another highlight of the visit was attending a lunchtime music concert performed by students of the music program.  The musical performances were dynamic, high energy, and soulfully impacting.  To witness the talents and vibrancy of these amazing young talented musicians was a profoundly invaluable and unforgettable experience.  It reaffirms my belief that music education benefits students in a variety of ways – it inspires confidence, promotes positive social, emotional, and mental health wellbeing.

My sincere thanks and gratitude to all who are well-wishers, and supporters of our yearly signature garden party fundraiser.  As well, special thanks to our generous financial donors whose commitment to ‘‘Keeping the Music Playing’’ provides extraordinary opportunities with lasting impact one person at a time.
