A Winter Clothing Drive for Refugees
The main goal of our Kingston Rotaract Club this year is to give support to all refugees in our community. Beginning on July 12th,, we began a close collaboration with KEYS, a registered charity that is doing an amazing job in engaging and supporting newcomers in Kingston.
Some of the refugee families, especially the ones coming from Ukraine, arrived here during the summer/fall with as little as a backpack due to the hurry at which they had to leave their home country. Being an international student myself and having moved from a much warmer country to Canada, I learned on my skin how tough Canadian winter can be if someone is not well prepared. For this reason, our Club had to help solve this problem!
KEYS usually runs a clothing drive to provide refugees with warm clothes donated from the community. This year however they wanted to do it BETTER and BIGGER!! After securing the beautiful and very spacious location from the city at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, they put together a huge community effort to collect donations of warm clothes and winter gear. The Kingston Rotaract club rallied the community behind this important cause. Our club reached out to fellow Rotarians in the community and the generosity was unbelievable. Over 50 donors gave clothing, including a large donation from the Ukrainian community, several large donations from Rotary/Rotaract clubs across Kingston, and a large donation from the Kingston Kiwanis Club. This shows once again that collaboration leads to greater benefits!
On November 2nd and 3rd the actual Clothing Drive took place. More than 14 volunteers form KEYS, Rotary, and Rotaract participated in the event. Overall, over 155 individuals benefited or will benefit from the Clothing Drive, and I am very happy to think that we made Canadian Winter much more enjoyable for a lot of people. Once again, this could not have been possible without the amazing organisation at KEYS, and without the breathtaking generosity of our community.
L’objectif principal de notre Kingston Rotaract Club cette année est d’apporter un soutien à tous les réfugiés de notre communauté. À partir du 12 juillet, nous avons commencé une étroite collaboration avec KEYS, un organisme de bienfaisance enregistré qui fait un travail incroyable pour engager et soutenir les nouveaux arrivants à Kingston.
Certaines des familles de réfugiés, en particulier celles venant d’Ukraine, sont arrivées ici pendant l’été / l’automne avec aussi peu qu’un sac à dos en raison de la hâte à laquelle ils ont dû quitter leur pays d’origine. Étant moi-même étudiant international et ayant déménagé d’un pays beaucoup plus chaud au Canada, j’ai appris sur ma peau à quel point l’hiver canadien peut être difficile si quelqu’un n’est pas bien préparé. Pour cette raison, notre Club a dû aider à résoudre ce problème!
KEYS organise généralement une collecte de vêtements pour fournir aux réfugiés des vêtements chauds donnés par la communauté. Cette année, cependant, ils voulaient le faire MIEUX et PLUS GRAND!! Après avoir obtenu l’emplacement magnifique et très spacieux de la ville à Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, ils ont mis en place un énorme effort communautaire pour recueillir des dons de vêtements chauds et d’équipement d’hiver. Le club Rotaract de Kingston a rallié la communauté derrière cette importante cause. Notre club a tendu la main aux autres Rotariens de la communauté et la générosité était incroyable. Plus de 50 donateurs ont donné des vêtements, y compris un don important de la communauté ukrainienne, plusieurs dons importants des clubs Rotary/Rotaract de Kingston et un don important du Club Kiwanis de Kingston. Cela montre une fois de plus que la collaboration conduit à de plus grands avantages!

Dans l’ensemble, plus de 155 personnes ont bénéficié ou bénéficieront de la collecte de vêtements, et je suis très heureux de penser que nous avons rendu l’hiver canadien beaucoup plus agréable pour beaucoup de gens. Encore une fois, cela n’aurait pas pu être possible sans l’organisation incroyable de KEYS, et sans la générosité à couper le souffle de notre communauté.
