The Dominica Smart Distance Learning (DSDL) Project is the largest project that the Rotary Club of Orléans has undertaken. On Friday April 8th we made our first in person visit to the Ottawa Smart Classroom at the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Training Centre in Kanata.

The project started with fundraising after Hurricane Maria devastated Dominica in 2017. Our efforts led us to develop a project to support the Prime Minister's vision of building a climate resilient nation. In partnership with the Rotary Club of Dominica, the Dominica State College, the Ministry of Education, the Builders and Construction Association of Dominica (BCAD), we proposed and were successful in getting matching funds to build a platform to support Distance Learning for the construction and trades industry in Dominica. We are collaborating with Colleges and Institutes Canada who are funding Algonquin College and Dalhousie University for the development of the curriculum, some of which will be delivered using the DSDL platform
The platform is finally complete and includes three smart classrooms: 2 in Dominica (Dominica State College in Roseau and Portsmouth HS in Portsmouth); and one in Ottawa at United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Training Centre. The project is currently in its Pilot Phase.

Le projet Dominica Smart Distance Learning (DSDL) est le plus grand projet entrepris par le Rotary Club d’Orléans. Le projet a commencé par une collecte de fonds après que l’ouragan Maria a dévasté la Dominique en 2017. Nos efforts nous ont amenés à élaborer un projet visant à appuyer la vision du premier ministre de bâtir une nation résiliente au climat. En partenariat avec le Rotary Club de la Dominique, le Dominica State College, le ministère de l’Éducation, l’Association des constructeurs et de la construction de la Dominique (BCAD), nous avons proposé et réussi à obtenir des fonds de contrepartie pour construire une plate-forme de soutien à l’enseignement à distance pour l’industrie de la construction et des métiers en Dominique. Nous collaborons avec les Collèges et Instituts du Canada qui financent le Collège Algonquin et l’Université Dalhousie pour l’élaboration du programme d’études, dont certains seront offerts à l’aide de la plateforme DSDL.
La plateforme est enfin terminée et comprend trois salles de classe intelligentes : 2 en Dominique (Dominica State College à Roseau et Portsmouth HS à Portsmouth) ; et un à Ottawa au United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Training Centre. Le projet en est actuellement à sa phase pilote.
Le vendredi 8 avril, nous avons effectué notre première visite en personne à la classe intelligente d’Ottawa au Centre de formation de la Fraternité unie des charpentiers et des menuisiers d’Amérique à Kanata.
