It is amazing to know that in Canada we have problems with drinking water. Rotary has built so many wells and supported communities around the world and now we have an opportunity to do so in our own country.

If your club is looking to support an Indigenous project that will allow you to Serve to Change Lives, then this is a project for you to support. District 7010 is requesting for funds to support drinking water on First Nations reserves. The government funds the building and Infrastructure but for sustainability they need more training. Rotary understands this that with any project it is critical that when the building is done, and we leave the communities need to support it onward.

If you are interested read the article below for details and contact them to speak to your club on this project and how you can help. You can contact them through their website.

This project is in the planning stages for 2021-2022 and will involve working with the non-profit organization called Water First.

Water First is the only charitable organization in Canada focused on addressing Indigenous communities’ water challenges through education, training, and collaboration. Together with First Nation communities, Water First is working to solve the issue that water treatment plants have no ongoing training in water management once the treatment plant is built.

Quick Facts:
  • The Water First Internship [15-month] Program supports young Indigenous interns to become certified water treatment plant operators, ensuring sustainable access to safe drinking water in Indigenous communities.
  • The Program also provides support in resume writing, employment coaching and networking opportunities. And supports such as access to childcare services ensure the program works for a diverse set of participants.
  • Young adult indigenous interns follow a program that leads to not only a job, but a career.

Programs to date:
#1 Pilot - Manitoulin Island - 7 First Nation communities #2 Kenora (Bimose) - 11 First Nation communities
#3 Georgian Bay - 8 First Nation communities - start May 2021 #4 Location?? - start spring 2022

D7010 Objectives:
  • Raise funds to provide support to Water First’s 4th program:
    • Obtain support from clubs in D7010 and other Districts in Canada and internationally.
    • Apply to The Rotary Foundation for a Global Grant; and
    • Access District Designated Funds.
  • Work with Water First to influence selection of the fourth program, preferably within D7010.
