Kingston Waterfront Rotary Club raised $20,800 in a five-day campaign to support ShelterBox relief efforts.
The campaign started when Capital Movers and Storage responded to ShelterBox’s appeal for assistance with their efforts in the recent earthquakes in Southern Türkiye (formerly Turkey) and northern Syria. They offered to match the first $5000 in donations raised by Kingston Waterfront Rotary Club for ShelterBox. For a small club like the Waterfront club, that was a challenge. In true Rotary fashion, the Waterfront club took on that challenge and by the end of the day had planned and launched a social media campaign that raised all the money needed to meet that goal within 24 hours.
It was upon reaching that goal that Capital Movers and Storage announced that Heron Management would increase the matching grant by $2500. The campaign continued and as that goal was approaching, it was announced once again that United Van Lines Canada would increase the matching grant by another $2500.
These rolling increases in matching donations brought continual momentum to the campaign and in just five days the Kingston Waterfront Rotary Club raised $10,800 plus the matching $10,000 from their sponsors, a total of $20,800.
ShelterBox is a disaster relief organization that provides emergency shelter and household items to help those who have lost their homes in disasters and war. Emergency Tents have arrived in Türkiye on a free flight by Turkish Airlines from Panama. A truck of aid carrying thermal blankets has crossed the border into Syria and is with our local partner, Bahar. We’re expecting more trucks of our aid to arrive in the coming days and weeks, containing further vital supplies. We’ll also be getting winter coats to children in Syria through our existing partner, ReliefAid. Most of the distribution takes place on location by volunteers, like Rotarian Dave Hallett, who has often traveled to disaster areas to distribute these kits. The funds contributed by the Kingston Waterfront Rotary Club will help comfort and shelter dozens of families as they recover from this earthquake.
