On July 1, 2022, the first female President of Rotary International will begin her term. Jennifer Jones, a Canadian from Windsor, Ontario will be kicking off her year as RI President with a cross Canada tour and her very first day as President will be right here in District 7040! The purpose of this tour is to highlight the tremendous contributions that Rotarians make to their communities and to projects around the world.
 
We are excited to be hosting Jennifer and her husband, Nick Krayacich, as well as a number of other Canadian Rotary International dignitaries including Director Valarie Wafer and Mark Wafer, Trustee Dean Rohrs and Rhino Rohrs and current President’s Aide Bryn Styles and Randi Styles. They will be in Ottawa June 29, 30 and July 1.
 
While part of their schedule will include visiting with government officials while in Ottawa, a number of activities are planned so that all Rotarians in the District may have opportunity to meet incoming RI President Jennifer and to celebrate the new Rotary year. Here’s what their schedule looks like and where you can participate:
 
Wednesday, June 29
Evening reception with Canadian government officials
 
Thursday, June 30
Morning and afternoon - visiting various Rotary projects around Ottawa
           
Evening - Foundation Dinner/District Changeover Banquet. All Rotarians in District 7040 (and surrounding Districts) are invited to attend this very special celebration of giving to the Foundation as well as the changeover to a new Rotary year and the pinning of our incoming District Governor Michel Wong Kee Song. This event will take place at the Ottawa Conference Centre. More information in the District Calendar on the left OR
 
 
Friday, July 1
Morning – special presentation for the first Arch Klumph society member in the new Rotary year
           
Afternoon – Softball and BBQ. All Rotarians, family, and friends in District 7040 are invited to attend. We are organizing a friendly softball game or two that Rotarians can participate in. Or just cheer from the sidelines and enjoy a hotdog/hamburger! Details in the District Calendar on the left or register here.
 
This is a unique opportunity to meet our incoming RI President and to celebrate Rotary. Mark these dates on your calendar!

Mental Health First Aid
Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem, experiencing the worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Just like physical first aid is provided until medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate support is found or until the crisis is resolved.

Area Rotarians Walk to Raise Funds and Awareness for The Rotary Foundation

Rotarians in District 7040 contributed some $13,000 on May 14 after walking to raise awareness of the Rotary Foundation, the charitable arm of Rotary International. District members hail from Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec, Northern New York, and Nunavut.

RYLA 2022

Six months ago, with everything still uncertain, the RYLA planning team made the commitment to having an in-person RYLA and, although we were not without casualties, it was a resounding success. To make sure everyone was as safe as possible, we put several measures in place including masking indoors, making certain a nursing student was on site, and having the participants rapid test before coming to camp. Unfortunately, three of the students tested positive and were unable to come. We have already told them that they are first in line for next year’s RYLA.
 
That left us with 40 students who came from across the district. We had 7 students from Quebec, 7 students from New York state and 26 students from eastern Ontario. As has become the custom, there were twice as many girls as boys and we had a range of cultures, languages, and countries (including an exchange student from Germany) in our midst. Yeah DEI! A special thanks goes out to the Rotary Club of Plattsburgh which sponsored Jacob Mitchell. He travelled the furthest taking 4 ½ hours, including navigating the Canadian border, to get to the camp.

DEI Committee – Tip of the Month

At the May DEI Committee meeting Rene Melchers from Rotary Club of 1000 Islands (Brockville) gave an enlightening presentation about HIP (Honouring Indigenous People - https://honouringindigenouspeoples.com). This organization encourages and supports relationship building between Rotary clubs and Indigenous communities. One aspect of this relationship is a Land Acknowledgment, a way for all of us to recognize the people before us.

RI and TRF position statement on COVID-19 vaccination
As the first organization to envision a polio-free world through mass immunization of children, Rotary believes the decision to vaccinate is a humanitarian imperative. The Rotary International Board of Directors and Rotary Foundation Trustees believe that:
 
1) Global vaccination is the path to ending the pandemic, and we strongly encourage vaccination for all individuals, including our members.
2) Misinformation hinders the fight against COVID-19, and we are committed to providing our members with science-based information.
