Rotary projects around the globe September 2023

Learn how Rotary clubs are taking action in Belize, the United States, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom.

As you read the September District Governor’s message, Simmy and I will be away traveling in the Galapagos Islands, mainland Ecuador, and Peru.  This is part of the Rotary experience we don’t talk about very much, but it helps put the International in Rotary International!

While not a formal Rotary trip, it was put together for us by Alonzo, a Rotarian travel agent friend in Brazil.  And while the couple travelling with us from Ottawa are not Rotarians (yet!), this doesn’t mean that we will not be connecting with fellow Rotarians.  In Ecuador we will be staying with a Rotarian ITHF member in Guayaquil. And in Lima we will join Alonzo and a group of students from Australia, Japan, France, and Germany who are based in Brazil for their Rotary Youth Exchanges, and who will tour Peru with us.  International or what?

District 7040's diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) committee joined with Ottawa area Rotarians for our first ever participation in Capital Pride by entering a team in the National Capital Pride Run/Walk to raise funds for Bruce House. The Rotary in Ottawa Team raised almost $700, and Lindsey Foster, member of Rotary Club of Kingston, was one of the event's overall top donors. National Capital Pride Run said: "Great to have our local Rotary district join us this year - we are in awe of the work you do! We hope to see you back again next year."

Community gardens play a crucial role in supplying fresh produce to needy communities. These gardens, typically established on shared plots of land, allow individuals to come together and cultivate crops for the benefit of their community. By growing fruits, vegetables, and herbs locally, community gardens not only provide access to nutritious food but also foster a sense of empowerment, education, and social cohesion.

PDG Fay Campbell, Rotary Club of Orleans, was recently interviewed on Rogers from Ottawa about why she became a Rotarian, and why she stayed in Rotary. You'll see pictures of her travels towards the end of the interview which you can see at https://www.rogerstv.com/show?lid=12&rid=4&sid=2734.

Every year, Rotary members around the world mobilize for World Polio Day. We raise awareness of polio and gather support for our global effort to make sure that every child is protected from it.

By staying tenacious, hopeful, and committed, we will make history by making polio the second human disease ever to be eradicated.

How you can take part in World Polio Day

Host an event or activity. The Rotaract Club of Samaro, Sindh, Pakistan, conducted a polio awareness session to educate parents about polio and its effects on children. The club provided educational materials and gifts for the children.

Plan a fundraiser. Rotarian Jason Browne partnered with Raids of Love, a community of gamers dedicated to doing good, to host “Gamers to End Polio” charity streams on Twitch, YouTube, Facebook, and Kick. They raised over US$4,000 for PolioPlus and also educated viewers on polio and Rotary’s PolioPlus initiative. Learn more about this fundraiser by watching the first Voices of Members video.

Post on social media. Use the materials on the World Polio Day Resources page to spread the word about World Polio Day and the importance of polio eradication. Don’t forget to use the hashtags #EndPolio and #WorldPolioDay!

However you decide to get involved, register your club’s action. No effort is too small or too big to share. As a special incentive this year, the districts with the highest percentage of clubs that register a World Polio Day action will receive a special thank-you message from RI President R. Gordon R. McInally.
